My Buzz

Hi everyone,

I am excited to be part of this community and I would like to introduce myself.

My name is Giles Etherington and I help purpose-driven, service-based small businesses to think, look and act like big brands. Giving you – and your clients –clarity, confidence and courage in your business.

I run Brand Satellite, a multi-award-winning brand consultancy, with clients across the UK.

Through my 3-stage process, I help small businesses and entrepreneurs who have either never thought about their business as a brand before or are not making the most of the brand they have.

I have nearly 20 years of big brand experience, and a similar amount of experience helping to grow small businesses.

Having a massive impact on a small business is much more rewarding than having a small impact on a massive brand.

Happy to discuss on anything brand-/branding-related with anyone in this community.

Looking forward to taking part in some interesting conversations.

Cheers
Giles

My Bio

My career can be condensed into to three stages.

The corporate creative: Spending 11 years at J. Walter Thompson in London (part of the world’s largest advertising network), creating famous and award-winning advertising campaigns for some of the UK’s best loved brands including Andrex, BT, Nestle and Kellogg’s, before moving to JWT San Francisco, during the height of the dotcom boom.

The creative nomad: Freelancing across Europe, with stints in London, Amsterdam and Athens. Working with multi-national clients including Heineken, Mitsubishi, TDK and Volvo. Helping set up a new advertising, design and marketing agency in Jersey and becoming Creative Director of an advertising and marketing agency in Edinburgh, which was part of Bob Geldof’s Ten Alps media empire.

The strategic consultant: Setting up his own brand consultancy to focus on his passion for brand creation, brand strategy and branding.

I have condensed all that knowledge into a brand creation process that works for pretty much any small businesses.

I am looking for purpose-driven, service-based small businesses that haven’t created a brand for their business yet.

Why purpose driven? Well, I have a passion for helping people. And, if those I am helping share that passion, achieving objectives becomes more enjoyable and more worthwhile.

And I also have a wish that I could do more to help save the planet. The best way I can achieve this is to use my brand-building experience to help those that are doing something.

So, if either of those descriptions fit you, or someone you know, let’s chat!

My Business Tips
  1. Create a brand for business - It helps you think emotionally, rather than purely rationally
  2. Identify and really understand your target audience - You can't be everything to everyone, be exactly the right thing to someone
  3. Be relevant to your ideal clients - Talk to them, don't talk about yourself
  4. Emotionally connect with your ideal clients - people make decisions dictated by the emotional part of the brain
  5. Be authentic - It builds trust quicker
  6. Tell your story - People buy from people
  7. Get help with all of the above - When you are inside the jar, you can't read the label
