I’ll happily admit that I’m not sure where Richard Thomas Copywriting would be without social media. I market my services in various different mediums, but it has been social media, and more specifically Twitter, that has been the driving force behind my success as a copywriter to date.

One of the many benefits to Twitter is its all-important use of the hashtag. In exploring the hash tag on first signing up to Twitter, I quickly became aware of both Twitter chats – scheduled networking hours that use a hashtag to run by – and the many competitions set up to give businesses more exposure and credibility.

After just a week or so of really throwing myself in to the world of Twitter, I came across #SBS. Small Business Sunday is run every Sunday, 5.00-7.30pm, by Theo Paphitis, formerly of Dragons Den, chairman of Ryman Stationary, Boux Avenue, and Robert Dyas, and joint owner of Red Letter Days, It instantly became obvious that this was the competition I needed to be entering, as previous winners seemed to be really glowing on the platform it had given them.

To enter, you must tweet Theo a summary of your businesses between the allotted time. He then selects just six winners each week. So, I tweeted my entry religiously every week, altering the wording each time, determined that one week I would tweet just the thing that would make me a worthy winner.

Sure enough, not one for giving up, Theo finally picked up one of my tweets, and I was selected as an SBS Winner on 3rd January 2016.

From the moment my win was announced, and with Theo retweeting my business summary to his 450,000 followers, my Twitter account blew up. I received hundreds of retweets and favourites, and gained over one hundred new followers. I have received lots more enquiries about my work, made countless new connections, and generally brand awareness has rocketed.

Having been welcomed in to the SBS community with all of its exclusive benefits, I can’t wait to see what is around the corner, and will keep you all well-informed with all things SBS.
