In total, 1,599,159 new cars have been registered so far this year up to July, placing demand 2.8% higher than for the same period in 2015 following a strong first quarter of 2016.

A total of 178,523 cars were sold last month, and these were evenly split between petrol and diesel models. The Ford Fiesta was the bestselling car, followed by the Vauxhall Corsa and Astra. More than 2.6m cars were sold last year.

However, whilst the overall figures remain positive, they mask a fall in private buyers’ involvement in the market, with sales to retail buyers falling 6.1% – the shortfall was propped up by fleet buyers.

Finally, of particular note is the fact that purchases of alternatively fueled vehicles continue to rise – with a quarter more registrations in 2016 than in the same month in 2015.
