Small Business Sunday (#SBS) winner Cards and Gift Wrap, based in the Western Isles, is making waves in a national campaign to protect Royal Mail’s Universal Service Obligation (USO). Led by owner Janet Ross-Jordan, the business has been instrumental in encouraging support for the petition, which is calling for parliamentary scrutiny of proposed changes to Royal Mail services.
Despite being the smallest constituency in the UK, the Western Isles now boasts the highest percentage of petition signatures in the country. Janet, who specialises in cards, stationery, and letter-writing materials, explains:
“Living in such a remote area, Royal Mail is a lifeline for us. Whether it’s hospital appointment letters, staying connected with loved ones, or simply the joy of receiving a handwritten card, it’s a service we can’t afford to lose or see diminished.”
The petition, launched by the Greeting Card Association (GCA), highlights the importance of keeping stamp prices affordable, ensuring deliveries remain reliable, and maintaining Royal Mail’s ability to meet its current legal obligations.
Janet’s passion for written communication runs deep. “During lockdown, I saw how people turned to cards and letters to stay connected. Even now, I see the power of a handwritten message – it’s something that can’t be replaced by digital communication. Sympathy cards, for example, remain one of my bestsellers, showing just how much the personal touch still matters.”
The Western Isles’ reliance on Royal Mail is amplified by the challenges of its remote location, where couriers often apply surcharges for mainland deliveries. “Our posties are amazing, and the service they provide is vital to keeping our community connected. But we need to ensure the system they work within remains effective and fair,” Janet added.
The petition has already attracted over 16,800 signatures, but it needs 100,000 to trigger a parliamentary debate. Janet is urging fellow SBS winners and small businesses across the UK to support the campaign and ensure their voices are heard.
“Being part of the SBS community is all about supporting each other and championing small businesses. This issue affects not just the Western Isles, but the entire country. Together, we can make a difference and protect this vital service for future generations.”
