My Buzz

We’ve just launched Updatly, and tradespeople are already using it to report from site on the app they use every day, WhatsApp. No new app and no logins for the crew. Roofers and joiners are helping us shape it, and we’d love more #SBS trades to join them.

My Bio

I’m Alex, founder of Updatly. I’m not a builder. I’m a software person who spent months listening to tradespeople, and the same story kept coming up: a job goes well, then weeks later someone disputes what was there when the crew arrived, or how it was left. Memory and a few phone photos don’t hold up.

So we built Updatly. Your crew sends updates and photos from site on WhatsApp, and Updatly turns them into a tidy, dated record of every job, a bit like a dashcam for the job. Firms using it have cut site visits and chasing, and have the evidence to hand when a customer or insurer asks.

Updatly is a small UK company, and we’re still working with a handful of trade firms to make it better. If you run a firm with more than one job on the go, we’d like to hear what you’d want from it.

My Business Tips

Tips I’ve picked up from the trades I’ve listened to:

  1. Photograph the site before you touch it, and again when you leave. Most disputes are settled by those two sets of pictures.
  2. Record the day’s work the same day. By Friday nobody remembers Tuesday.
  3. Keep job records in one place the whole crew already uses, not scattered across personal phones.
  4. Confirm changes to the work in writing, even a short WhatsApp message, before you do them.
  5. Make it easy for your crew. If recording a job takes more than a minute, it won’t get done.
