SEO Tips for Small Businesses

Hello #SBS Winners, I'm thrilled to be here with you learning about your amazing businesses.

As an experienced SEO specialist, I thought I'd share some of the most important tips with you, to help improve your website visibility on search engines in 2021.

First off, What is SEO?

SEO or Search Engine Optimisation is the process of making changes to a website (on-page SEO) and elsewhere on the web (off-page SEO) to better rank a website in organic (non-paid) search results.

SEO has seen huge changes since the launch of search engines in the late 1990s. With search engine algorithms frequently changing and evolving, SEO practices must also change and update.

To make a brief comparison; when search engines began, they recognised keywords and used them to assume relevance when ranking pages. Today, Google uses over 200 ranking factors in determining where a website should rank. To make it a little tricker, they don't tell us what they are 🙂

Here's the best basic SEO tips I can give you to start moving up those organic search engine positions.

  1. Keyword Research – Start here. Without knowing your keywords, moving on to any other parts of SEO is pointless. Establish your keywords, see what people actually search for, how many people search for it, and how much competition there is for each. Make use of free tools to help with this including Google Keyword Planner and Google Trends.
  2. Title & Meta Tags – This is the title and description of your web pages, as shown in search results. Include your main keyword, relevant to the page you are optimising. A brief but descriptive meta description is good. This is your chance to 'sell' and get users to click on your website.
  3. Quality Content – Quality content is essential. Show the user that you are an expert in your industry with well written, relevant and useful content. Demonsrate trustworthiness with reviews and testimonials, including third party sites such as Google My Business and Facebook.
  4. User Experience – A clean, easy to navigate website, that loads quickly and displays correctly will keep a user on your website. Page loading pefromance is also becoming a ranking factor in the next Google update this year.
  5. Fresh Content – Keep your content fresh! Make regular website updates as necessary. Add blog posts relevant to your business, services or products.
