My Buzz

We love some PR and drum banging about Gift in a Tin in the North East Press, thanks bdaily!

My Bio

2014 was an exciting year for Gift in a Tin, winning some really high profile competitions and also appearing on Dragons Den Series 12!

I started the business in 2008, when I was recovering from a spinal injury and couldn't find any British knitting kits. Frustrated, I designed my own. I also designed and TradeMarked the Gift Tin to hold the knitting kits. The business has expanded and now stocks 10 different ranges of luxury gifts, mainly from the UK, many handmade - from soy candles, to cotton aprons, Alpaca knitting kits and grooming kits for men..and more!

Initially I continued to be employed as an Enterprise Coach working with the long-term unemployed to help them start their own businesses. I continue to be a volunteer mentor, but am now working full time in Gift in a Tin.

Our Gift Tins are available online from our own website and other etailers. We also wholesale to a small number of independent high street outlets and have been in discussion with larger partners such as John Lewis, Disney and Heals, Our Gift Tins are also in demand for corporate events, such as golf days, where we brand the Gift Tin and contents for the customer.

The business is really the Gift Tin - we can put anything in the two sizes we have at the moment, but we're aiming to expand to have larger Gift Tins next year as well as a party planning arm to the business.

My Business Tips

Research, research, research in all business activities; and when you think you've done enough research, do some more.

Understand your customer needs, actively ask for feedback and act on it. The customer is always right :)

Get your pricing right. Don't undersell yourself. Everyone likes a bargain, but you have to cover all your costs and make a healthy profit or there's no point running a business.

If you don't know something, ask. Be open to learning, especially in the ecommerce sector 'cos it's always changing!

Enjoy it! If you do well, it's down to you. If it goes badly, it's your fault, but at least you're the person to take positive action asap and put it right.
