My Buzz

The kitchen at Foodamentalists is totally wheat & gluten free; it’s the heart & soul of our business.

That's where we spend most of our time coming up with new recipes and that's where we make all of our gluten free food from scratch. We do everything with equipment not much bigger than you would use in your own kitchen so we can really take care over everything we bake.

Because we love our gluten free products we only put the best ingredients inside them. You can't say that you love food and then use cheap ingredients, but finding the best ingredients takes quite a bit of effort that is why we source most of our ingredients locally.

Our approach to making great gluten free food is simple. You don't need a degree in food science to read the ingredients on our products. We work hard to get rid of all those artificial nasties with long names that a lot of food producers like to add in to make their products cheaper & last longer.

My Bio

The Foodamentalists Gluten Free Bakery

In just four years this small free from food business has gone from making a handful of baking mixes to supplying its premium quality pies to Selfridges’ flagship London store.

The Foodamentalists is a gluten and wheat free bakery based in Cheshire.

The business was started by trained chef Stevan Taylor in 2009. Following his redundancy from a pub management career, Stevan started making organic ready meals under the name The Foodamentalists from his base which was then in Yorkshire. Some of his recipes were naturally gluten free and he started to attract a following of local coeliacs. Many of these customers asked him for more gluten free options.

“I always say I was bullied into providing gluten free options by my customers!” quips Stevan. “But I’m grateful to them for making me aware of the huge demand for good quality gluten free food.”

So that was it: the challenge was set - and it was one that Stevan embraced. He spent the next couple of years perfecting his recipes & learning more about how different flours and starches react with one another, and the gelling points and cooking temperatures of each.

This saw Stevan develop his range of gluten free baking mixes. The range includes a bread mix, shortcrust pastry mix, tortilla mix, Yorkshire pudding mix and doughnut mix. As well as being gluten free, the mixes are free of wheat, dairy, soya and some are also egg free.

Stevan says, “The mixes pretty much sell themselves. They’re always very popular at food fairs, coeliac group events and markets and we don’t often take many packs of mix home with us.”

The best sellers among the mixes are the Yorkshire pudding mix, the tortilla mix and the vegan bread mix. All the mixes are available online and from a selection of health food shops, farm shops and delicatessens nationwide.

The Foodamentalists have picked up a number of awards for their products: they won a Great Taste Gold Award in 2011, a Foods You Can award and 3 Free From Food Award in 2012 and were commended in the Free From Food Awards this year & voted most innovative free from brand 2013 in the Foods You Can Peoples Choice Awards.

All The Foodamentalists’ products contain no additives, preservatives, artificial colourings or flavourings, and are made with locally sourced ingredients.

Exciting times for The Foodamentalists

By the middle of summer 2013 The Foodamentalists started supplying their luxury pie range to the food hall in Selfridges’ flagship London store on Oxford Street.

The range includes a fidget pie, a pork pie and a pork, black pudding and caramelised red onion pie.

Stevan says, “This is such big news for us. We’re hopeful that Selfridges’ free from customers will enjoy the luxury pies.”
