Danny set up DJS Research as sole trader working from his spare room in 2001. After the birth of his first child, DJS upgraded to an office in the garden (or a shed as friends sometimes joke!). Since 2001, Danny has helped the company to grow year on year and turnover for 2012 is expected to be well in excess of £2 million (we have moved into bigger offices a few times as well)...
In the past three years alone turnover has grown by three hundred percent. DJS now employs 32 permanent staff, along with a team of 50 telephone interviewers. Last year we undertook research in over 30 countries and our staff traveled to markets including Bangladesh, India, China and the US to manage research projects.
Danny has day to day responsibility for running the company but he is also still involved in managing research projects.
When a client enquiry comes in, always respond immediately, ideally with a phone call rather than an email. Clients have often commented that a very quick and good quality response leaves a lasting impression.
Don't dismiss the small jobs - clients that initially commission a project for a few hundred pounds can and do come back with repeat business and much larger contracts.
It is very true that profit is sanity, turnover is vanity. Virtually all staff can contribute to the bottom line in some way. They should be made aware of the importance of this, and rewarded for anything they do to improve cash flow and margins.
